Employee gets booted off Zoom call in the middle of getting fired: 'I had to rejoin with my personal email'

There may not be a perfect way to let go of an employee, but this was definitely not the way to go about it. This woman logged onto a Zoom call with her boss and HR, only to be cut off mid-call right after her boss said that today would be her last day at the company. It turns out her boss clicked a button to immediately revoke her access to everything, which promptly booted her off the call. 

Talk about something that could have easily been avoided if this woman's boss and HR department had handled these situations more carefully. This was one of those companies where the IT department was nonexistent, and several folks were taking on more responsibilities than their initial duties entailed. While that might be commonplace in some workplace environments, it does not mean that it's an excuse for a lack of professionalism.

  • For me, the most telling aspect of this story is that when the employee rejoined the call, her boss had already left. Perhaps she was oblivious or perhaps she knew that she had humiliated herself as a professional and didn't want to face that fact when her newly dismissed employee rejoined to negotiate her severance package.

    Right when my manager said "and today is your last day" I saw her click her mouse and I was logged off of everything— even the call in which they were laying me off. I had to rejoin with my personal email. What a dummy. I think of it every now and then and laugh.

    Add: there was no IT department at this company, so don't praise them for being on top of things in any way. One of the software engineers doubled as the guy who made the corporate emails.
